J. and the girl

For years, we wanted to visit St. Peter Ording but never really managed to get there since it always felt to be too much "off route"… This time we decided to make the miles as we planned to visit some German friends we got to know on our last trip to Cap Verde. Our timing couldn't have been better as SPO (that's how the insiders call St. Peter Ording) was hosting this years biggest kite event, the Beetle Kitesurf World Cup (http://www.kitesurfworldcup.de/english/).

After paying he mandatory 12 Euro fee (1 car, 2 adults "Kurtax"), we entered the enormous sand beach of SPO just around noon. Several hundred of campers and cars were parked in a tight disorder. Party was on! Generators humming to produce the energy for the loud techno beats. As far as you could see there were party people on the roofs of their mobile party homes. Our initial plan was to spend the nights at the beach, but we wisely decided to check in at a very nice local camping instead and only enjoy the vibrant life during daytime. We must have grown up?

The few days we spent in SPO gave us all from hot weather with no wind to rain, rain and again rain. And some wind - all from 45 knots to nice kiteable conditions. In SPO we both got to kite in such crowded conditions that the traffic jam in Paris seemed like a joke in comparison. Even though the wind conditions were not so world class we still managed on our last day to see the kite elite compete in Freestyle. An amazing experience! Youri Zoon, Kevin Langeree and Gisela Pulido only to mention some.

It was brilliant to meet up with J. and S. again and specially Noah enjoyed the company of S. Thank you guys! Spiderman keeps talking about "the 7-year old girl"….

The quest for a new Tramontana spot

For years we have enjoyed the privilege of surfing Tramontana side shore conditions at our place of dreams "Beauduc". As we earlier wrote is this spot not accessible by our surf mobile anymore. As northwest wind (Tramontana) is besides Mistral (north wind) the main wind direction here in South France, we had to find a new spot.

After some careful search in our Holy Book (Europe Kite Atlas) we got confirmation on what we most feared. There aren't that many, to be exact, exactly one which fits our criteria. 

1. Accessible by our surf mobile (no hight restrictions on parkings)
2. Possibility to camp wild or camping area right at the beach

So we made our way to Le Jai, which we have visited already last year and got a great, yet very busy session at a strong Mistral. This time, forecast was one day Mistral and then Tramontana. Neither one of the winds gave us its full force or most ultimate conditions, but a great session anyhow.

We had a good time with friends and truly the only worry that crossed our mind was the knowledge of the water in the Le Jai -bay being the most polluted water in entire France. The spot is not recommended for beginners since they tend to spend too much time in the water. Scary and worrying. One might wonder if the illuminating effects we run upon in the night were results to the water…

Kaverit kaukana

Jo viimeiset kymmenen vuotta olemme aina päätyneet kesälomallamme Beauduc-rannalle Ranskaan. Rannasta on tullut meille rakas paikka vaikka onkin karu ja rumankaunis, hankalien etäisyyksien takana ja kaikin puolin erikoinen lomakohde. Ranta ja sen ympäristö ovat luonnonsuojelualuetta ja jo monen vuoden ajan on ollut ilmassa mahdollisuus, että rannalle pääsy rajoitetaan mahdottomaksi. Tähän asti surffarit ja muut meidänkaltaiset ovat aina onnistuneet jotenkin järjestämään tiesuluista huolimatta rannalle uusia reittejä, mutta nyt vaikuttaa kuitenkin siltä, että tänä vuonna emme rannalle pääse. Tie on valtavan kivimuurin kaventama ja alueen käyttöoikeuksista käydään viranomaisten kanssa kiistaa. Rannalle saa henkilöautolla mennä, siellä saa viettää aikaa muttei yöpyä. Ja vaikka haluaisi sääntöjä koetella niin emme me autollamme kivimuuria ohita. Piste pitkälle rakkaustarinalle?

Koska olimme sopineet rannalle treffit kavereidemme kanssa oli korvaava paikka haussa. Plage Napoleon sai toimia tapaamispaikkana. Ranta on aivan Beauduc-rannan lähiseuduilla joten hyvin samanoloinen, mutta vastarannalla siintää teollisuutta ja perille vie asvaltoitu tie. Kaiken kukkuraksi saimme yllätykseksemme huomata, että rannan parkkipaikka on "Stellplatz". Siis matka-autoille merkitty yöpymisalue ja vielä ilmainen sillä täysin ilman palveluita. Vaikka paikka ei olekkaan yhtä hehkeä tai aiheuttanut rakastumista silmänräpäyksessä oli fiilis kuitenkin aika huipussa kun tuuli puhalsi rantaan hienoa surffikeliä aaltojen kera ja kaverit saapuivat hetkeä meidän jälkeen. Ilta meni pitkäksi mukavassa seurassa ja harmaansateinen seuraava päivä oli pikkukaveruksille mitä hohdokkain.

Ei Napoleonista ole Beauducia korvaamaan, mutta oli mukava tavata. Koska huomiseksi on ennustettu Mistral-tuulta olemme porukalla siirtyneet vajaan tunnin ajomatkan päähän Le Jeï nimiseen paikkaan. Ranta ei mitenkään täytä aurinkorannan kriteerejä, mutta on tällä kovalla tuulellea alueen ehdottomia tähtipaikkoja. Tänään siis eilistä aikaisemmin nukkumaan ja huomenna heti aamusta pelipaikoille!
